Things about corporate life no one tells you about?

  1. No matter how much you like your work or how good your position and salary are, after a certain period things become monotonous and boring. To survive make sure you don’t have a monotonous personal life.
  2. Initially in your career don't stick with a company for more than 2–3 years unless you have an onsite opportunity or a better salary hike. Try switching at least once or twice before completing 5 years of experience to reach a good salary.
  3. After you reach a certain experience and salary you won’t be getting enough calls for interviews it becomes challenging to switch jobs. So, plan accordingly and if you have a good team and company after a few switches stick with it.
  4. Learn as much as you can in the first 2–3 years because as you will grow older you might lose interest and don’t feel like studying. In this industry, you need to keep learning every day or else you will be replaced. If you don’t like learning on your own, look for opportunities which give you the option to try and learn new things while working.
  5. Communication skills are underrated. If you command that, you can reach heights which you have not even imagined. So apart from technical skills focus on non-technical skills too.
  6. There is nothing wrong in negotiating and looking for a good salary because unless you have rewards attached to your passion you can't be motivated all the time.
  7. Don't get into your job so much that you start losing your inner peace. It's just a job. Keep doing and learning things you like along with your job. Job is part of life and not the other way around.
  8. Socializing with your team is as important as technical skills because every leader is looking for a team player. Be friends but don’t trust anyone blindly. It is also very important to be on good terms with your manager but ensure that you don’t get too personal.
  9. Never believe in spoken words, make sure you always have things in writing. Always communicate over email and the official chat app instead of personal chat and calls.
  10. Once in every 5–10 years when the market changes, you will see layoffs. No matter how hard you work and how loyal you are if the company wants you can be replaced. So, always ensure you have 6 months' salary as a backup so that you will have enough time to prepare and find a good job.
